Motivation in Learning Chinese as Second Language in National Primary School in Malaysia

Abstract

Motivation is a major factor in the success or failure of students in learning second language. Low motivation will affect language learning. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of MyDialogKopitiam Module on students’ motivation, as well as examine the Second Language Motivational Self-System (L2MSS)in learning Chinese as Second Language (CSL). A quasi-experimental study with pre-test and post-test design was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of the MyDialogKopitiam Module on motivation with 90 students from eight national primary schools. The instruments used was L2MSS Questionnaire consists three components, which is Ideal Second Language Self (IL2S), Ought to Second Language Self (OL2S) and Second Language Learning Experience (L2LE) component. The t-Test revealed that the treatment group did better than the control group in UPD and UPB. Meanwhile, the IL2S, OL2S, and L2LE components in the treatment group increased significantly. In comparison, the control group's IL2S component increased than OL2S and L2LE.The findings of this study have implications that the students from treatment groupsobtain high motivation in learning CSL.
